Housebreaking is usually the first thing that a new puppy owner thinks about. Few puppies have received any teaching on housebreaking before they go to their new homes. There are two straightforward methods that you can use to housetrain your puppy and you can use either one of them or you can apply both of them at the same time along with dog training.
The first mode may be the most tough as you will need to be very watchful about staying with your puppy and noticing his manners. Puppies will squat to urinate and defecate and you will need to watch intently but as soon as you see your puppy changing stance you must scoop him up and take him outside to his chosen spot. If you happen to miss the signs you must not rebuke your puppy because he does not yet know what is expected of him.
Remember you can watch the dog training videos before you start. Also, if you do miss the sign and you come across it later, it will only frighten your puppy if you scold him then. Dogs are not like humans and they can only relate to what is happening now. If you admonish him afterward for a potty accident he will not apprehend that is why he is in trouble. He can only recognize if you scold him for something instantly.
The newspaper method is the second way of housebreaking your puppy. Conceal the complete floor where your puppy runs around. He will do his business on the newspaper and he will quickly learn that the paper is tolerable. You must then slowly get rid of more and more newspaper until there is only a small piece left. Then you will be able to take the newspaper outside to the chosen spot. He will then start going there where the paper is.
Both of these methods can be very effectual. You may want to use the first method of watchfulness during the day and the newspapers at night. If you are frequently active with other things you may want to use the newspaper method more frequently.
Sometimes during housebreaking, a puppy will go through a period where he seems to revert and fail to remember what he has learned. This is a exasperating incident but it is typical so do not discipline him for it.
You can use his own innate dog behavior to get him back on track. A dog will not dirty in his own space. Use a crate and make it snug for him. Let him snooze in his crate and when you let him out, right away take him to his designated spot. He will have to alleviate himself straight away and he will quickly learn that this is the only suitable spot to do his business.
Housebreaking does not need to be complex or frightening. Both of these methods can be quite useful and if you try them along with some endurance you will be victorious with your housebreaking before you know it.
